Winter:
Sign, say, Alex Gordon for, say, 1×10.
Trade for Mark Melancon. it’d require the Giants to eat some, and the pirates wouldnt give up anything big. basically a 1 yr 10 mil FA signing.
Before Oliva/Pache/Waters shows theyre ready, the team would look like:
LF: Gordon, CF: Reynolds, RF Polanco, 3b Moran/Hayes, SS Tucker/Newman 2b Frazier/Newman 1b Bell C Diaz/Stallings
SP: Taillon Archer Williams Musgrove Keller Anderson (Agrazal/Brubaker/Brault/Marvel/Bolton)
7th/8th/9th inning RP: Kela, Melancon, Crick, Burdi, Santana?
Assuming ~20 million in raises to players [is this reasonable?], and assuming my calculations are correct, this team would be even cheaper than 2019, so they could go bigger on the few FA additions if they wanted. Heck, they could sign Will Smith the RP.
]]>and this is really just to get spending back to this year’s paltry level. if they ONLY get payroll back to a still-pathetic $90 million, they’d be able to add an additional good player what already seems like a pretty deep, good, young team.
]]>And once they’d have Oliva + Pache/Waters, i’d then become more open to a Marte deal. Which would then require its own article. But the Phillies would be obvious.
In theory, they could deal Marte and Vazquez and free up ~$15 mil in 2020. In theory, one of Oliva + Pache/Waters would be ready *early* in 2020. In theory, they could throw a chunk of that freed $15 million at a decent-good closer this winter. In theory, they could add a ton to the future of this club without really taking away much, if any at all, from the 2020 club, as long as they bring payroll back up to a responsible level.
]]>Ugh, this is the worst quote. Can you get any cheesier?
Okay, so I love how you presented this, Kevin. It’s an intriguing way to look at the potential returns for Pittsburgh’s most valuable asset. If LAD offered May/Smith + and GMNH turned it down b/c they’re trying to go for it this year, that would be a fireable offense. That’s the Godfather deal.
I’ve been enamored w/ Pache for some time, so a package around him and an elite arm + Langliers sounds enticing, as well.
I’ve tinkered w/ the thought that maybe a team on the cusp of competing could make the call as well. If the SDP or CWS called and offered from their deep farms, it could be worth it.
I’d like the idea of Patino, Orenals, Morejon & Austin Allen from San Diego. Or Luis Robert, Aaron Bummer (I’m mildly obsessed w/ acquiring Bummer so .. I’ll drop his name in all of my comments), + from CWS.
I love watching Vasquez in Pittsburgh, but it’s the smart move to pick up the phone and… buy for the future?
