He did have a bad year defensively though. The Yankees would spend $11M on an insurance policy catcher but I think they’d rather drive up the market for their competitors and then sign Cervelli after ’19 if Sanchez becomes full time DH.

On the other hand, he’d have a chance at a World Series ring somewhere else on a big budget team. Ironically, the Yankees might like to have him back over the injury prone Sanchez, and he could DH there against left handed pitching.

At this point, he would have more value to an AL club, where he could DH, play some first, and catch once a week or so–essentially, making him the version of John Jaso that could catch and still actually play worth a damn. If the 2019 Pirates were going to go all-in instead of just dipping their toe into the deep end of the pool (and I’m not sure which approach is the correct one), then I can see holding on to Cervelli, but I think he has enough trade value where I’m comfortable moving on from him.
