Rule 5 is an interesting way of thinking of him, actually, in terms of his early usage. Hurdle is the right guy when you have a player of this caliber, but needs some positive coaxing to reach his fullest potential.

Everyone thinks every player develops at the same linear rate. There are adjustment period for everyone, let alone someone that doesn’t speak the native tongue.
I have confidence in Kang for 2016 and beyond.

Not only is Pittsburgh a bigger stage, but the staff that the Pirates want Kang to relate to and trust are here. In a perfect world, the Pirates would have a seamless system in which people at every rung emphasize a common message, but there is variance. At his age and experience, if they want Kang to develop as a major league player, then the big club is where he needs to be.

He’s more than a rule-5 guy and I, too suspect his role will grow a bit as the season goes on. But for now, he needs to be hearing Hurdle’s voice and those of his staff. He needs to be getting BP and instruction from the big club with the big boys.

Coming from another continent is a very difficult transition and not everyone adapts immediately. My first impression of him has been that he is not a major league shortstop due to a lack of range but you can definitely see that he has legit power in the bat. In time he will be a useful player, whether that be off the bench or in the everyday lineup. It was never realistic to think he could come over and immediately be a star, though.
